Ocimum carnosum
Ocimum carnosum is a herb of 0.3 to 1 meter high, which occurs in Mexico, Mesoamerica, Paraguay, Uruguay, Argentina and Brazil.
Essential oils obtained from Ocimum genus? plants are well quoted in the commodity market, especially the basil oil (commercially known as sweet basil oil), which is produced on a large scale by many countries (India, Bulgaria, Egypt, Pakistan, Israel, Yugoslavia, United States, Madagascar, Albania and Hungary), and the annual output is approximately 42.5 tons.
The product is highly valued for containing linalool, an oil responsible for fixing the perfume Chanel No. 5 and which is traditionally extracted from rosewood (Aniba rosaeodora), an endangered Amazonian species. The production of linalool from basil essential oil is therefore an environmentally sustainable alternative to linalool from rosewood.
