The shape and color of T. erecta petals are very variables, being the range of colors from white to cream,  yellow, gold and orange. There are many hybrid varieties available to gardeners. At the Ver-o-Peso Market, there are two types: yellow with narrow petals and orange with expanded petals. Tagetes erecta is probably native to Mexico, where it is known as "Flor de muerto", being cultivated since pre-colonial times.
