Jose da Gama Malcher

This Statue is dedicated to honor Dr José da Gama Malcher, a Physician born in the town of Monte Alegre (Locate in the Amazon River, around 600 Km from Belém). The statue was proposed by the Municipal chamber. Malcher witnessed important revolutionary movement like Cabanagem, he was also a great contributor for the Hospital Santa Casa de Misericórdia, working for free. He was ahead of the team that fought against the yellow fever in the Province . He was also the President of the Province of Pará

It was finished in 1890. The statue was designed by the Belgian Sculptor Armand-Pierre Cattier and made in Brussels. The pedestal stone was brought from Ecaussinnes, in the Belgian province of Hainaut.

In the Base of the Statue there is a figure of a man, representing the people, carving the name of Malcher in the stone.

According to Historian Soares, the place were the statue is located, held the important Train of War, where the army of the Province stored their weapons.
