Located in the neighborhood Cidade Velha, it was named in honor of Mr João Diogo Clemente Malcher,son of Felix Antonio Clemente Malcher, who was the first president of the rebel Movement called Cabanagem, that took power over the city in 1832.
Its previous name was São João, because in the 1700's a chapel with this name was constructed on this street.
