Located in the Neighborhood Comércio, it was named in honor of Mr João Alfredo Corrêa de Oliveira. He was the president of the Province of Pará (before it became a State). He was in Office from October 20th 1869 to 17th April 1870.

Its previous name was Merchant's Stree. It was also named  Jail Street because the Jail was located somewhere on this street.
