Located in the Neighborhood Campina, according to Historian Braga Ribeiro, it was named to honor the 48 men who were elected by the People to defend the Sovereignty of the Country against the Kingdom of Portugal.

The tradition says it is because of the 48 men that were killed during the Cabanagem movement in 1835.
