Ocimum campechianum occurs from the US to Argentina and the West Indies. Common in disturbed areas.

In folk medicine, it is widely used as an analgesic, antipyretic, diuretic and stimulant. The tea from the aerial parts of the plant is taken orally or used in poultices. It also has anti-inflammatory action, anti-tumor and anti-microbial, inhibiting tumors. It is an important source of essential oils - in the leaves, inflorescences and seeds of the adult plant - whose medicinal, aromatic and culinary properties are recognized and used in medicine and in cooking.

These essential oils have pharmacological action of antifungal and antibacterial properties.
