C. citratus is widely distributed in Brazil, where it received numerous vernacular names among them include: "erva cidreira", lemon grass, grass-scented and lemon balm.
Cymbopogon citratus originated in tropical Asia, cultivated throughout tropical America.
Is a plant used in folk medicine, where its leaves' properties are diaphoretic, analgesic, tranquilizers, anti-depressant and diuretic and expectorants, in addition to being antibacterial, hepatoprotective, antispasmodic, stimulating peripheral circulation and stomach stimulating and lactation.
The essential oil extracted of its inflorescence is used as insect repellents.
