According to popular beliefs, the seed of this fruit, known as "fava de cumaru", contains cumarina, a substance with several medicinal uses, besides of being used in perfumery as a substitute for vanilla, flavoring tobacco and for oil extraction.

Dipteryx odorata is found in the Brazilian Amazon, from Acre to Maranhão.
