Shrub of about 3m high.

Piper callosum occurs and the entire Tropical America, recently introduced in the southern United States and Asia. Possibly, this species is the most common of its kind in tropical America.

The medicinal use of Piper species includes treatment of venereal diseases, intestinal disorders, genitourinary ailments, epilepsy and to prevent conception.

The essential oil of P. callosum has about 16 compounds and it is used as an aphrodisiac and for mosquito bites.
