Small tree that can reach up to 6 meters of height, with the popular name of Matico.
It occurs in the Central America, Antilles and South America. In Brazil, it is more frequent in the States of Amazonas, Amapá, Pará, Mato Grosso, Ceará, Bahia, Minas Gerais, Espírito Santo, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and Paraná.
This plant was found by a injured spanish soldier, named Matico. He learned with the local tribes that the leaves of this plant could stop bleeding. So, Matico was introduced in the american and european's medicine by a doctor from Liverpool in 1838, as a hemostatic and astringent for wounds.
