Four-Eyed Fish

This small fish is found in rivers and in the ocean. One of its singularities are the eyes (four eyes), located above and below the head. It is comon to see it along the beaches in Salinopolis (130 Miles from Belem) and Mosqueiro island (43 Miles from Belém), it it harmless to humans.

Popular Name: Tralhoto

Scientific Name: Anableps anableps.

Habitat:  Freshwaters, in rivers and Lagoons, sometimes in salt waters along the beaches.

Feeding:  Feeds from insect, algae and small fishes.

Geographical Distribution : Amazon River and north Coastline of Brazil.


Characteristics:      
Four-eyed fish,  either of two species of tropical American river fishes of the genus Anableps (family Anablepidae, order Atheriniformes). Four-eyed fishes are surface dwellers and have eyes adapted for seeing both above and below the water surface. The eyes are on top of the head, and each is divided into two parts, an upper half for vision in air, and a lower half for vision in water; hence, the common name. The fish grow to a maximum length of about 30 centimetres (one foot).It may weight around 400 grams
