In 1890, one year after the Republic had been proclaimed, the cornerstone was placed. The monument was created thru a Contest conducted by the goverment of the State in the following year.Artists, politicians and State Clerks participated to select the winner. The Italian sculptor Michele Sansebastiano was the winner.  The original project was modified when the Sword was introduced in substitution of the small branch in the had of the republic figure

Construction started in 1892 and was finished in 1897. The initial budget was  120.000 "contos de Réis" (the currency of that time) and when the work was done 288.000 "contos de Réis" had been spent.

The heights of this monument is 65.61 Feet. It is made in Carrara Marble and Bronze. The figure in the top of the Columns is the statue called Marianne with the badge representing the republic..

The winged woman setaed over books represents Histoy. The woman writes in a book holded by a genius the exact date the the Republic was proclaimed.

In both sides of the Monuments there are 2 genius. One represents Honesty and the other, the Union.

In the base of the Monument are written the names of the people who governed the State.
